Welcome to the Hummingbird Cottage!
The cottage was renovated by the owners in 2010. We had to jack up and level the floor, replace much of the frame with new timbers. The metal roof is the original except for three new bright skylights. The recycled exterior siding was simply nailed “backside-out” exposing a fresh looking cedar surface.
The interior was completely redone, with new maple tongue-and-groove flooring, drywall, and a Pacific Energy woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with butcher-block countertop, stainless steel fridge and a Premier Peerless gas stove.
The bathroom is bright with glass block windows, the tile floor is heated and the neo angle shower has glass walls and door. The master bedroom has windows that “peek” into the woods, a solid maple floor, and a queen size wooden bed. The sleeping loft has been furnished with double and a single bed built by the “owner” using local alder which was milled on site.
The renovated cottage-on-lake is ready for your use, with a wrap-around deck on the waters edge. Enjoy the sunshine and view, or head down to the dock or beach for a swim, or a for some boating with the provided kayaks, canoe, stand-up paddle board and small row boat with electrical outboard motor.

The place is a Family and Pet Paradise, or Romantic Retreat, surrounded by lake, forest and access to private ocean beach and dock.
Explore the West Coast with forest trails, ocean and lake shore to explore, an island within swimming reach, free use of kayaks, canoe, stand-up paddle board and boat, a deepwater dock with boat launch, peace, quiet and stunning scenery.
The Bold Bay Hummingbird Cottage is a 700 ft2, including the sleeping loft. It is literally right at the lakeshore. The cottage is a perfect base for exploring island living on the west coast.
Village Bay Lake connects to a park-protected chain of lakes. The chain provides excellent day or overnight canoeing and kayaking opportunities, with calm warm water, sandy beaches, rocky bluffs and access to hiking trails leading to view points and the ocean.
Enjoy BBQ lunch on the deck, or play games on the landscaped and grassy yard, including badminton, and bocce. In town you'll find both basics and luxuries including fresh produce and other delectable treats at the weekly Farmer's Market.
A canoe, two kayaks, a stand-up paddle board, and a small rowboat with an electrical outboard motor are available at no charge.
The shoreline of sheltered Crescent Channel (also called Bold Bay), provides beachcombing and shell fishing (oysters and clams - dependent on season/red tide). An on-property deepwater dock with boat launch is available to those who want to take advantage of some of the best salmon and prawn fishing on the coast, or just get a little closer to the marine life.
You may choose to bring your own boat and arrive by boat. The southern shore of Quadra Island, and other nearby Discovery Islands are home to some of nature's most spectacular wildlife including bold eagles, dolphins, orcas, porpoises, and seals.
Local telephone calls are free. Long distance call can be made using calling cards, or direct at a cost of 5 to 10 cents per minute for most calls (calls to cell phones are more expensive).
If you have pets, bring them! Dogs love the forest and the lake.

Summary: A comfortable cottage, lakeside where we saw loons, otters and a beaver from the verandah and from the water craft supplied. The peace and privacy were wonderful, the hosts were gracious and the week allowed us to thoroughly slow down and relax.

Summary: Beautiful setting right on the lake. Roomy cabin as described with a very comfortable bed. Our two big dogs were free to roam and we all spent a lot of time in/on the lake. Would definitely visit again

Summary: We had a great week staying at the Hummingbird Cottage! Tons of fun swimming and paddle boarding. We also enjoyed kayaking on Village Bay Lake and also ventured into Main Lake for lunch and a swim! Hope to make it back again one day!

Summary: Hummingbird cottage is a gorgeous, cozy place to stay on a beautiful lake. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding and eating outside. Summary: My family spent a week at The Hummingbird Cottage and we enjoyed every minute of it! Driving up to the cottage, we were immediately impressed by the incredible lake views, the lush green forest and the hidden cottage located right at the water's edge. It was a great first impression that continued on to be a lasting one with each day we spent there. The cottage, itself, was immaculate, and with our stop at a grocery store in Campbell River, we had everything we needed for our week. A comfortable bed in the bedroom and a large sleeping loft easily accommodated our family of 3 and the kitchen/living/dining area was the perfect size for us. Our teenaged son quickly discovered the selection of watercraft at the dock and we all spent an wonderfully hot and sunny week with him kayaking up the lakes, paddleboarding, swimming in the warm clear lake, taking short jaunts in the electric powered boat, jumping from the rock "cliffs" on the nearby island (which we could easily swim to or take the kayaks and tie them off) and midnight star gazing from the dock. We also spent time in the small grassy field behind the cottage playing badminton (although we seem to have hit upon a "high time" for wasps as we did have to abandon our games on several occasions due to their numbers). As a runner, I did find that I could run the gravel road back to the pavement (about 4.5 k one way) with only a few vehicles driving by creating dust (it was a beautiful forested run which was good as long as I wore bug spray)! There were several deer to be spotted on a regular basis - including one that came up on our deck at 3 am to munch on the roses planted in the planters (which did, we must admit, give us a few tense moments until we realized what it was!). We also enjoyed a short hike to Bold Bay and a drive to Sandy Beach for some ocean beachcombing. Taking a drive around the island offered the opportunity to take in the beauty of the area, sit oceanside for lunch at the Heriot Bay Inn and grab a few extra groceries (as well as more books from a quaint little bookstore as we had plenty of time to relax and read) from the stores in Heriot Bay and Quathiaski Cove. It is very true that there is no cell service at the cottage (which we enjoyed but it took getting used to) but you can find "Cellular Reception" signs in the area should you want to check in on the "outside world"! We loved this place and highly recommend it! Thanks, Reidar and Marjery!

Summary: We loved our stay at Hummingbird cottage. The little cottage itself is beautiful, with a gorgeous kitchen & bathroom, and two nice bedrooms (for those with young kids, note that the loft is up a very steep ladder). The location on Village Bay Lake is spectacular - jump straight off the dock and swim around the island, or walk to Bold Bay if you want a swim. Bring groceries as it's a bit of a trip into town, but we really appreciated having basics like olive oil and flour on hand. On my daily runs, I was surprised if I saw more than two cars in three quarters of an hour. Reider and his son Leif were welcoming and responsive to any questions we had. Leif set up a badminton net and croquet for us, as if we didn't have enough to do already! Our dog was in heaven with room to run & a lake to swim in. Absolute bliss (we'll be back to Hummingbird Cottage).
